January 2016 brought fire to Tasmania's Lake Mackenzie the surrounding Western Tiers, Mersey valley and February Plains. This weekend the area was officially opened to the pubic.
The scene was deeply saddening with groves of the endemic pencil pines (Athrotaxis cupressoides) burnt out and unlike to regenerate. But there is some hope, regeneration is beginning with the grass and ground cover species and some of the partially burn pencil may continue to grow on. The damage is wide spread but not total.
